Description
A set of two lampwork glass disc beads ready to be used in jewellery making. These spiral discs are made from Momka’s borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is strong and durable.
Each disc is individually made by hand in our Yorkshire studio. This means that every disc will be slightly different. These discs are made on 2.4mm mandrels which means the hole is 2.5mm in diameter – perfect for adding to a cord or chain – and idea for adding to earring findings where the hole side will allow them to move.
Each disc is made by winding melted borosilicate glass rod round a metal mandrel. This needs a torch generating temperatures of around approximately 1250°C (2300°F) . Beads are then annealed in a digitally controlled kiln to ensure that any stress that is introduced while the icicle is being made is removed. Stress occurs during making because of the high temperatures needed to melt the glass, and annealing the glass makes sure the bead is strong. Once cool the bead holes are cleaned, leaving the beads ready to use.
As every bead is a slightly different size we’ve photographed them on a grid of 25mm / 1 inch squares. This lets you see the sizes as well as how the colours of the set work together.
We photograph our beads in a lightbox. Photographing the same beads on a dark background helps you see how they could look while being worn with dark clothing.
To ensure that your beads reach you in perfect condition they’ll come packed in bubble wrap.
This set is ready to post – the set you can see is the set you’ll receive. While not identical the two discs are well matched and would work well for earrings.
